Career development as a Leader and Manager

We believe that all new and existing staff progressing into a leadership and management role should have the opportunity to develop a set of core management skills, behaviours and attitudes, underpinned by our values.

The Manager’s Passport

The Manager’s Passport is a way of developing the core skills, knowledge and behaviours that support leadership and management

The ‘passport’ concept relates to the journey that leaders and managers take. The core aspects represent the visa – or entry level requirements to enable individuals to feel confident and competent when managing their teams. There is also a range of additional development activities to support staff as they develop further in their role.

Being Brilliant

Senior leaders at Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust have been participating in the Being Brilliant programme since May 2019. The programme is currently being reconfigured to be made available to all colleagues interested in developing their leadership skills further in a health and social care context.

Being Brilliant is made up of four modules

Module 1 – Personal Leadership

This module creates clarity on the personal leadership shift required, it invites individuals to recognise what might get in the way of success and generate approaches to remain personally resilient in times of perpetual change. We consider how collectively ‘we’ are the culture and examine values-based leadership and our commitment to modelling and embedding the organisation’s values into every aspect of our work.

Module 2 – Leading Compassionate & Safe Care

Participants are encouraged to think about and understand their own role in creating a climate for the delivery of compassionate care. We explore how leading with increased compassion and creating psychologically safe environments leads to better outcomes for patients and service users. Participants will focus on the impact that emotions can have on their own performance and on the performance of others around them.

Module 3 – Inspiring Others

Considers how leaders ‘show up’ each day and impact on others’ behaviour and performance. Specific focus is given to how participants build capability to inspire through better emotional connections through empathic listening. We examine how having a coaching mindset can lead to heartfelt commitment, self-empowerment and creative excitement among peers, team members and others.

Module 4 – Leading for Improvement

Participants will apply Quality Improvement principles to a specific piece of change they have identified within their area of work. This module builds understanding and skills to adopt a culture of continual improvement and innovation.

You must complete all 4 modules to receive a certificate of completion. Module 1 must be completed first, and subsequent modules can be completed in any order.
